2004 MadFish Carnelian Reviews

Carnelian is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon/ Carignan and Grenache and a varietal that has its origins in California. This one is an ink staining glorious purple and very deep, dark and alluring. Blackcurrants, spicy plums, blackberries, mocha chocolate and cedary oak all abound from the aromas. Soft and smooth on the palate with a glossy finish and fine assertive tannins. Quite an elegant yet powerful red that drinks well, very well actually. Try this with beef and mushroom pie.Drink now to 2014.

Carnelian is a new variety, created by American Professor Olmo, who crossed cabernet sauvignon, carignan and grenache. Howard Park is experimenting with it in Margaret River and has released it under the MadFish label. Full of plum and blackcurrant fruit notes and a hint of dark chocolate, it has a juicy palate with firm tannins.

Harold Olmo, a visionary USA grape scientist, predicted the boom of Western Australian wine back in 1955. He crossed an existing cross ? cabernet and carignan ? with grenache to invent this variety specifically for California?s warm bits, and although MadFish thought it was sangiovese, it works well in the West. Inky, slender, viscous, gentle, concentrated and intense, it?s black olivine wine with soft fine tannin, perfect for rare venison or kangaroo. Exclusive to Cellar Door.

An unusual variety that was believed to be sangiovese when it was planted but surprised all as this rare variety and showed quality and interest in the vineyard and winery. So good things can come from mistakes and accidents and Madfish are excited and are persevering with carnelian.Like sangiovese it is a savoury variety with dusty sweet fruit characters and lots of gentle spices. The palate is juicy with soft fleshines balanced by spice, good acidity and gentle tannins. A lovely quaffing wine that would suit food.
