2001 MadFish Shiraz Reviews

I recommended the 2001 Shiraz in a previous issue, but it is performing even better. A dense ruby/purple colour is followed by abundant aromas of blackberry and berry fruit intermixed with hints of licorice, pepper, and earth. Fruit-driven, medium bodied, surprisingly concentrated, and supple-textured, it will drink well for 2-3 years

Tasting these truly excellent wines you would hardly know they are the second label of Howard Park. The smooth and ripe cherry and raspberry fruit with spicy peppery undertones on the bouquet of the 2001 Shiraz lead into a palate of excellent balance and structure, and a gentle touch of French oak. Definitely punching way above their price weight.

Here?s a steal: a song of shiraz and the sea for $15. Yes, it?s brash and solidly built, nervous and raspy. But there?s also some restrain ? it?s claret in composition, Rhone in flavor, classically Western Australia in structure and presentation. Buy it by the case.

...it's a little beauty. There's plenty of warm, ripe, savoury fruit on the palate and the first smell suggests something pretty interesting. The second sniff and you've just got to throw it down the hatch. It has a dense colour and a beautiful, classically shiraz nose. The palate offers a soft, supple texture with fruit dominating the French oak that's been used. I like the fact that winemaker Michael Kerrigan has gone for French oak because it seems to sit perfectly with the spicy, plush shiraz fruit. The good news is that these vines are starting to show some maturity and more of this quality fruit will be available in coming years. This is a smart wine that offers plenty.Drink now but it would cellar for five years or so.
